Hotel of the week: Sanderson

Jumat, 27 Juli 2012

The spotlight's on London and if you're in town for the Olympics and staying at the Sanderson, you're in for a treat. Getting around the capital is going to be hellish and moving around as fast as possible without being stuck in traffic is essential - especially if you don't want to spend your break trying to get to places. Sanderson's complimentary bikes for guests teamed with their new bike tours mean you can explore London without having to rely on public transport, plus you'll already have a route mapped out for you!

So whether you'd like to take in the city's royal attractions, the best places to eat cake or discover London's architecture, there's a tour for you. There are six themed tours (three starting from Sanderson and three from sister hotel St Martins Lane) - The Royal Tour, Design & Architecture, Fashion & Cake, East London, Art & Tea cycle and Sunset. Each route shows the best of its theme plus some hidden gems and both hotels are ideally located in Central London so you'll start from a great spot too.

The bikes are by Dutch brand Public J7 (because who knows cycling better than the Dutch?!) and are also available to guests via the hotel concierge.

To add some luxury to the experience, Sanderson guests can order the hotel's famous Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea to go for a tasty treat along the way! Who needs Boris's bikes when you can cycle London in style? Plus, when you're done cycling and need to unwind, a relaxing treatment in the fabulous Agua Spa will make you feel worlds away from any sporting activities!

Rooms at the Sanderson and St Martins Lane start from £199 per person including a full English breakfast and free wifi. Download the cycle maps from morganshotelgroup.com

Ever been to a floating market?

Rabu, 25 Juli 2012

Everyone loves a good vintage market but I bet you've never been to one that floats... If you're in East London over the next few weeks and looking to fit some shopping into your Olympic schedule, head to Mile End and visit the Floating Market on Regent's Canal, where you can pick up books, vintage clothes, hats, handicrafts and loads more. The market is trading until 16 August before it moves to Little Venice in West London from 20 August to 2 September.

There's plenty of food on offer too with cakes, Slovakian dishes and sandwiches to keep you well fed. Some of the traders include vintage hat shop Chapeau Bateau, retro clothes boutique Frocks A Float, glass jewellery specialist The Glass Barge and London's first herbal apothecary in 350 years Herbal Barge. If you fancy getting your hair cut, there's even The Floating Salon!

Cruising for young people

Cruising is getting younger. It's not just for retired folk and people in their early twenties want in on the action too. A recent survey by Mintel showed that 55 per cent of 19-24 year-olds wanted to go on a cruise, compared with just 26 per cent of over-65s.

I've found a cruise ship that the young, trendy and glamorous will love. Introducing MSC Divina, the latest ship to join MSC Cruises' fleet inspired by the timeless elegance of Italian film star Sophia Loren.

MSC Divina features a 4D cinema and Formula 1 simulator, a real stone piazza, an opulent spa and an exclusive yacht club. The cabins and suites range from Inside cabins to the MSC Yacht Club Royal Suite with its walk-in wardobe, bathtub in the bathroom and a games cosole. The sexiest of all is the Sophia Loren Royal Suite on deck 16, designed by the actress featuring rich reds, photographs of her and a replica of her own dressing table so you can get ready like a film star!

The ship has 18 decks (14 for passengers), each named after an ancient Greek god. The MSC Aurea Spa has a range of treatments including Balinese massages. There's also a sauna, a Whirlpool and gym. The MSC Yacht Club offers ultimate luxury and has its own concierge, butler service and world-class entertainment. Its Top Sail Lounge is where you can go for high tea and panoramic views! The Yacht Club Library offers books in six languages and 20 books chosen by Sophia Loren herself!

So what does MSC Divina lack for modern day cruising? Free wifi. There is wireless internet in communal areas and you can connect from a laptop in your cabin but it's not free of charge and the internet on cruises is known to be expensive so you may want to spend the week having a digital detox!

MSC Divina cruises year-round in the Mediterranean and seasonally in Northern Europe, the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean, South America, the Indian Ocean, and South and West Africa. It boasts 1,751 cabins, 25 lifts and 30,000 square metres of public spaces with a casino, seven restaurants, 20 bars and lounges, four swimming pools and a bowling alley.

A seven-night cruise starts from £399 (cruise only) per person. Seven nights in the MSC Yacht Club Suite costs £1,689 per person and the Sophia Loren Royal Suite is £2,249 per person.

The hotter it is, the bigger the discount at Banyan Tree and Angsana resorts

Kamis, 12 Juli 2012

We all love a good hotel deal but isn't it great when you get one that's fun too? Banyan Tree has come up with the coolest (or should I say, hottest?) discount I've seen in a while and is offering you a percentage off your holiday depending on the temperature.

You can make huge savings on your holiday this summer at any Banyan Tree or Angsana resort. With The Hotter, the Better promotion you'll get money off your stay based on the degrees in celsius at the hotel recorded at noon. The offer isn't just for accommotion and you can use it on spa treatments and gallery purchases too. I've been to a Banyan Tree spa where I had the best ever massage - so definitely worth it!

The key is to find out which Banyan Tree and Angsana resorts are the hottest right now and choose your summer holiday destination depending on this.

For example, if you booked a stay at the gorgeous Banyan Tree Phuket (pictured) on 3 July where the recorded temperature at midday was 33C, you'd get 33 per cent off accommodation, spa treatments, plus anything you bought in the hotel's gallery and breakfast for two people. If you booked a DoublePool Villa, you'd save £270 on the room rate.

If you haven't already left this page to find out where you'd like to use The Hotter, the Better offer, the promotion is valid until 20 July and is for a minimum of two nights for a stay before 30 September 2012. The discounts are capped at 40 per cent at Banyan Tree Spa, Banyan Tree Gallery, Angsana Spa and Angsana Gallery.

So, where's looking hot today? Banyan Trees Al Wadi (43C), Samui (33C) and Hangzhou (36C), and Angsanas Marrakech (41C), Laos (32C) and Great Barrier Reef (29C).

Hotel of the week: Wythe Hotel

Senin, 09 Juli 2012

The hotel I'm loving this week is the new Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn, which is a former factory dating back to 1901 that has been preserved and renovated to offer 72 rooms on the Williamsburg waterfront in the heart of the New York borough. The Wythe has kept the building's industrial character with bare brick walls, original pine beams and cast-iron columns, and it has a New York apartment style about it.

The rooms feature oversized windows, heated concrete floors and seasonally sourced mini-bar offerings.
There are also antique mirrors and eco-friendly bath products. If you want a hotel in New York with amazing views, the Wythe offers views of the Manhattan skyline and the East River from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

In the hotel's restaurant Reynards, there's a wood-fired oven and grill, courtyard seating and daily menu and seasonal cocktails. The food at the hotel is managed by renowned Brooklyn restaurateur Andrew Tarlow.

The Wythe is set in Brooklyn's most vibrant neighbourhood with art galleries, bars, restaurants and boutiques within walking distance. It's one subway stop from Manhattan and minutes from Union Square. Doubles from $179.

Get holiday hair at home

If you're forever trying to achieve holiday-style curls at home and have tried all the surf hair products in the shops but still can't get the look right, you need a Yogi Hair Wand.

You know the style I'm talking about right? Those gorgeous natural curls that you get after a day at the beach when your hair has been exposed to the sea and sun.

I've tried so many products that claim to achieve the look but it was only when I used Yogi's amazing styling wand that I managed to get the curls right.

The wand has a unique high-tech tourmaline and ceramic barrel, which means a more even heat and its smooth surface creates extra-shiny curls that stay in place for longer without looking too tight.

The key is to take bigger sections of hair for looser curls, which look more natural and holding each section around the wand for 10 seconds before releasing. Once you've done it with all of the hair, take a wide tooth comb and comb the curls to make them look even more natural.

The wand is lightweight and comes with a glove so you don't burn yourself. What I love most about it is how quickly it heats up and its super long swivel cord that makes it easier to curl the back of your hair. It's ideal if you want beachy hair quick!

With the wand being so light, it's great for taking on holiday if you don't get gorgeous hair on your travels. I'm off to Greece next month with a friend who has a problem with 'big hair' when she's anywhere hot, so I thought she'd be perfect for me to test the wand abroad too. I'll post some pics of the wand working its magic on her holiday hair soon...

And if you fancy holiday-style curls without having to travel anywhere you can get a Yogi Hair Wand for £64.95 from yogihairwand.com

Six cool hotel libraries

Jumat, 06 Juli 2012

Love books? And hotels? Check out these beautiful hotel libraries that give you the perfect excuse to be a book worm on holiday...

The new Viceroy Maldives has everything you could ever want on a luxury holiday in the Maldives - beachfront villas, private plunge pools and a beautiful library! In case you get bored of sunbathing on the pristine Vagaru Island where the hotel is located, this gorgeous room full of books and cosy chairs will keep you occupied for an afternoon of quiet reading on an idyllic island. Bliss.

In India, Taj Falaknuma Palace is a grand hotel that has hosted royalty and Heads of State. It oozes antique style with marble staircases, Venetian chandeliers and rare furniture. Its library is pretty impressive too and made up of rare books and manuscripts. There are 5,900 books on literature, art, history and religion in the Palace Library, as well as first editions of epic romance Titanic, encyclopedias from the last century and one of the most special collection of qurans in the country. The library is a replica of the one in Windsor Castle with teak and rosweood book-lined walls. Even if you read a book a day in this library, it would take you 16 years!

If you like films, you need to check in to Astoria 7 in San Sebastian, Spain, which is the ultimate hotel for movie buffs. Not only was it built on the site of the city's old cinema, but it also has rooms named after film stars who stayed at the hotel during the San Sebastian Film Festival. So what does this have to do with books, you ask? Astoria 7 only has a fantastic library full of books on film to match its theme.

With funky fibre optic lighting that changes colour, cosy sofas and trendy lampshades, the library at Carlisle Bay in Antigua is one place for book worms to be seen. It houses various fashion, art and travel reads and even includes a collection of books chosen by leading travel journalists. Just don't forget where you are. The hotel is set on a secluded beach on the Caribbean island so you might want to do some reading on the beach too.

Radisson Blu Edwardian in Guildford has one of the most inspiring libraries around. The hotel's interior designer Rabih Hage, was inspired by local author Lewis Carroll and the concept of performance. There are sky-high bookcases with a 'ladder to nowhere', a library kiosk with a secret staircase so you can watch and read from the roof and a screen inside with a fire blazing for you to sit and read a book in a warm atmosphere. There are also children's book readings held in the kiosk throughout the year.

Aptly named The Library, this hotel in Thailand has a stunning spot to store its books. You can leave your holiday reading at home if you're staying here as there are hundreds of titles in the alabaster-white library to leaf through, plus a selection of DVDs to watch. At The Library it's all about books. The suites are referred to as 'pages', the restaurant is called The Page and there are bean bags at the beach bar so you can enjoy relaxing with a book and cocktail in hand.

A ride on the Emirates Air Line

Kamis, 05 Juli 2012

When I first heard about London getting a cable car I wondered why we didn't already have one - we are London after all. I thought it would be ages before the Emirates Air Line was actually built but it's finally here and is a nice addition to the city's skyline.

I took a ride on it the first weekend it opened and was pleasantly surprised. Even though the ride lasts just 5-10 minutes departing from Greenwich in South London (a great spot for tourists) or Royal Victoria Dock in North London (not where you'll find many tourists) it's perfect for visitors to London who don't have too much time but still want to do as much as they can, as well as commuters who fancy travelling by air to work.

The best thing about it is the amazing views. I went just before sunset and the summer warmth and orange sky made London look, dare I say it, magical. You can see the Thames, the O2, Canary Wharf and beyond.

Something else that I like is that it's sponsored by Emirates with the staff wearing uniforms similar to the flight attendants and making it feel like you're having a travel experience in London.

It doesn't cost too much either. If you have an Oyster card or if you're a visitor to London and have bought a Travelcard for the day it costs £3.20 each way or £6.40 for the '360' round trip fare. But if you're paying cash it's £4.30 each way or £8.60 for a '360' trip.

It's open until 9pm in the summer and times will change throughout winter.

Hotel furniture for your house

Senin, 02 Juli 2012

If, like me, you find yourself admiring a hotel's design and interior when you're on holiday and wanting to take it home with you, you'll love Discover & Deliver.

The website allows you to turn your house into a hotel with its exclusive collection of furniture that can be found in hotels around the world, which you can buy and have delivered to your house.

The Greenwich in New York, Barnsley House in the Cotswolds and Maison Moschino in Milan are just a few of the hotels that you can recreate in your home. For example, if you see a sofa, a chandelier or a lamp that you like at a hotel, you can visit the website, search for the hotel you stayed at and see if the item is available. Or you can find out who the designers who worked on the interiors of a hotel are and browse all the items by that designer. Once you've found something you like, just click to buy. It beats having to ship furniture home when you're on holiday.

It's also better if you're not after something specific as there isn't a huge range of items from each hotel available at the moment so it's perfect if you like the general style of a hotel and would like to add a piece of it to your home. The perfect souvenir to have of a memorable hotel stay!

If you're an interiors addict, you could even pick your hotel or holiday by using Discover & Deliver to see which interiors please you most! I certainly wouldn't mind staying at the Nobis Hotel in Stockholm after seeing the cool furniture it has.
