Photos: A weekend in Geneva (part one)

Rabu, 06 Juni 2012

I spent a weekend in the beautiful Swiss city of Geneva, full of culture, fabulous food and lots of watches! It's not at all how I imagined it and although it is a brilliant place to go for a luxury city break and it is a haunt for billionaires, there's lots to see and do on a budget too. Some of the most memorable attractions from my trip include the iconic Jet d'eau, the house where Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein and the breathtaking vineyards just a 10-minute drive out of the city. Here's my 48 hours in Geneva in pictures...

Belle epoque Savoie paddle boat - the perfect way to see Geneva from the lake

The old engine on the Savoie paddle boat

Up the stairs to the first class dining area, of course

I usually hate foam in any dish but these tandoori prawns with risotto were amazing

Steamed cod with dill and pink berries, and soy consommé

Raspberry crusty Napoleon and ice cream

Naturally the captain invited us up to his bridge!

Where the locals come to swim in Lake Geneva - Bains des Paquis

The Duke of Brunswick mausoleum - he left a lot of money to Geneva in return for having his tomb in a prominent position

Dinner at the pretty Buffet de la Gare de Celigny

Delicious courgette spaghetti a la provencale

Inside the Buffet de la Gare de Celigny - Kofi Annan sits in this corner when he comes to the restaurant!

Stunning architecture in Geneva

How cool is this view of the mountains from a flea market?

Talking of cool, this is probably the most interesting car park I've ever seen. Saint-Antoine is part car park, part archeological site

The main square Place du Bourg de Four, where people meet in the day and night and people watch from the cafes

Flags in Geneva's old town

Architecture and great balcony!

The political heart of Geneva - the Town Hall

The Cafe-Restaurant de l'Hotel de Ville just opposite the Town Hall

The most elegant fish and chips you've ever seen? Perch in lemon and butter - delish!

Geneva has a few quirks too. Did you know that the city is home to the world's longest wooden bench? It measures 120 metres and was built in 1767!
